Some of our favourite moments from SCINEMA 2019

Some of our favourite moments from SCINEMA 2019

As the year winds down, we look back at some of our favourite moments from SCINEMA 2019, including premiere screenings and a filmmaker visit!

From face transplants to the physics of skateboarding, the SCINEMA 2019 line-up was a diverse one! This years line-up featured films from all over the world including France, Canada, Australia, and the UK.

To kick off our walk down memory lane, we have to start with you, the audience,  you loved Face of a Stranger so much so it took home the People’s Choice Award.

“The incredibleness of what we have understood to achieve face transplants is amazing,” said one audience member. We couldn’t have summed it up any better ourselves!

One of our favourite parts of SCINEMA is connecting the audience with a filmmaker. This year, it was the director of Smart Slime? Julie Martineau that made the trip to regional Australia, all the way from the UK! She was a part of a very special Q&A in Dungog, regional NSW.

Ahead of her visit, Juliette said she was “very excited to see people’s reaction to the film and hear some of their questions about it”.

We’re always blown away by how passionate young people are about SCINEMA.

At our Bunbury screening, one child approached the SCINEMA team, wanting to discuss the ethics behind a face transplant.

“I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’ll have to look into it,” were the words from the child. While the film might have left them feeling conflicted, we left excited, knowing that we’d reached one person.

And as for a favourite venue, we can’t go past the Deckchair Cinema in Darwin! With gorgeous weather, an ocean view and a beautiful sunset, there was no better way to watch science films on the big screen!

Following the premiere screenings, we went straight into community screenings! From Botanic Gardens to museums and schools – and even at your homes – we had a wide range of venues that hosted SCINEMA 2019 events. In fact, there were just under 1400 community screenings were held across the country!

After looking back on this year, we can’t wait to see what SCINEMA 2020 has in store.

Don’t miss your chance to get involved – film submissions are still open! For more information visit FilmFreeway.

See you in 2020!
